[VIVA.CO.ID] TOPAZ, THE PROMISING SUSTAINABLE PALM CULTIVATION

The increasing population growth worldwide is one of the reasons for the world to implement a sustainable food system is inseparable from. In mid-2019, for example, the United Nations (UN) released a report which states that within 30 years there will be an increase in the world’s population to 2 billion people. So that from the current number, 7.7 billion will become 9.7 billion people by 2050.

Furthermore, Indonesia is said to be one of the 9 countries that will contribute to add more than 1 billion people or more than half of the world’s population growth. So, producing sufficient food in a sustainable way is a serious effort that must be done.

On the other hand, global population growth cannot be overcome by simply increasing food production. It will potentially create a greater risk of environmental costs, while we are protecting biodiversity.

So, the question is about the complexity and urgency of making a sustainable global food . Bernard Riedo, Director of Sustainability & Stakeholder Relations Asian Agri said that Asian Agri participates in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals proclaimed by the United Nations until 2030.

“The principle of sustainability in the management of oil palm plantations contributes to achieving food self-sufficiency, as mandated in the second goal of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. However, the challenge is that how stakeholders remain committed to reducing negative environmental impacts. “
