The Jakarta Post has reported on the work of The Fire Free Alliance (FFA) in reducing forest fires in Sumatra.

The group, a collective of forestry and agriculture companies and civil society groups, has expanded its forest fire prevention outreach to 218 villages across Indonesia, covering more than 1.5 million hectares of land.

In Riau and Jambi, two provinces in Sumatra where massive forest fires have created environmental problems in recent years, fires in nine villages under its Fire-Free Village Program had been reduced by roughly 50 percent between 2015 and 2016, the article reported, citing FFA’s annual report.

Established last year, the FFA focuses on fire prevention through community engagement with members including APRIL, Asian Agri, IDH, Musim Mas, PM Haze and Wilmar.
