Riau, 21 February 2018 – In its ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce the number of land fires in Indonesia, Asian Agri continues to work together with village communities and governments, especially in the Riau and Jambi provinces.

Among the steps that Asian Agri takes to prevent land fires include providing socialization and training, as well as fire extinguishers to the communities in anticipating the possibility of fires occurring in the villages and in the vicinity of the company’s pam oil plantations.

“Together with the community, village officials and stakeholders, we routinely conduct patrols and monitor potential fire areas in each village, particularly in the areas which are in the process of being cleared, as well as areas with conflicting claims of ownership,” said Zulbahri, Asian Agri Manager of Sustainability.

To maximize fire prevention efforts, Zulbahri explained that Asian Agri also builds fire control towers and monitoring posts in these areas, utilizing digital-based technology to monitor fire locations more quickly and efficiently so that any fires will be handled as rapidly as possible.

Asian Agri’s fire prevention commitment is bolstered by its Fire Free Village Program (FFVP) which has been in place since 2016. Under the programme, Asian Agri is partners with nine villages in Riau and seven villages in Jambi, providing the villagers with regular fire awareness and prevention training.

Asian Agri equips each FFVP partner village with fire extinguishers as an early preventive method to stop any fires from expanding.
