27th August 2016 – Asian Agri is expanding its renewable energy program to provide enough electricity to power more than 28,000 houses.

A by-product of manufacturing Crude Palm Oil and other products, Palm Oil Mill Effluent can be used as a source of renewable energy.

Asian Agri’s existing biogas plants in Riau, Jambi, and Sumatera Utara each produce around 2MW of electricity. About 700 kilowatts are used to power the mills, while the remainder can be used for other purposes.

By 2020 Asian Agri plans to build 20 biogas plants, enough to power more than 28,000 homes.

This program supports the government’s aim to reduce dependency on imported fuel, and also provides a sustainable power source, reducing emissions that can lead to climate change.

If all 8.4 million Ha of oil palm plantations in Indonesia follow suit, the Indonesian energy market could be radically transformed.
